Tephra is an IT and retail staffing and recruiting firm. We source, screen and place technical talent for client companies across the United States, on permanent placement and on contract, and we support those placements with assessment testing, background checks, relocation assistance, salary surveys and evaluation services.
The firm has been doing that continuously since 1998, through several complete cycles of the technology labour market. That is the credential we actually have, and we would rather put it plainly than dress it up.
What we are not is a résumé mill. We take a requisition in a conversation, work the search ourselves, and send a short list with reasoning attached. Clients come to us for the roles their own pipeline has not produced, which means the searches we run are the narrow ones: a Rails developer who has actually shipped inside a startup, a business analyst who understands the credit default swaps market.
Both sides of that transaction matter equally here. A company with an open requisition and a technologist looking for the next engagement are the same problem seen from two ends, and this firm exists to close the gap between them.
Tephra is a geological term.
Tephra is the fragmental material thrown out by a volcanic eruption. In tephrochronology, a single ash layer settles across an entire region and becomes a dated marker horizon: the reference layer geologists use to correlate one site against another, and to trace a fragment back to the eruption that produced it.
Correlating a fragment to its source is, precisely, what this firm sells. One person, one role, matched on the detail that actually identifies them.
It is an etymology, not a metaphor we are asking anyone to work at. But it is the reason for the name.
