The business world has had a long-standing love/hate relationship with hierarchy.

Without This, Your Highly Visible Recruiting Tech Investment Won’t Pay Off

Thu, 09/14/2017 - 07:40

If your people don’t care about your recruitment process, introducing recruiting technology into the mix is unlikely to help. It can actually make things worse. On the other hand, if you’re running on all cylinders, tech can become the heart of your recruiting function.

Why Diversity Sourcing is so Hard

Thu, 09/14/2017 - 07:00

Promoting cultural diversity via talent acquisition has been an initiative we’re all writing into our strategic goals. We know organizations that have broadened cultural diversity have the potential to outperform competitors by 35%, creating a huge opportunity for HR to again prove its worth as a strategic business partner.  So what’s the catch? What’s keeping us from accomplishing this goal? Some may say the difficulties derive from the nature of the business, geographical location, lack of resources, etc. While there may be a grain of truth in that, for the bulk of us the challenges are born out of stagnant hiring practices.

What is the Future of Sourcing?

Wed, 09/13/2017 - 14:00

It’s incredible to think just how much sourcing and recruitment have changed since businesses first began to invest in talent acquisition functions. I can’t imagine what it must have been like 20, even ten years ago, when conveniences like LinkedIn and even browsing the web were unheard of. Our sourcing resources have changed dramatically over time, to say the least. Upon looking at the past and how much things have changed, it makes me wonder just how much sourcing will evolve over the next 20 years. What new, disruptive technologies will once again transform the function? How will we utilize those technologies? What changes will we see in talent acquisition as a result?

Engagement Surveys: It’s What You Do About the Results That Counts

Wed, 09/13/2017 - 12:42

Does each of your employees know how their job contributes to the big picture? Are you truly interested in their input? The answers too often are no to both of these questions, which is bad for employers. An employer with an engaged workforce can experience higher productivity, higher profitability, and lower absenteeism and turnover rates.

Using Videos to Source

Wed, 09/13/2017 - 08:00

When you think of video use in recruitment you probably imagine some kind of career videos. But the usage of videos for staffing purposes could go far beyond that. At the last Sourcing Summit Europe, and more thoroughly at Sourcing Summit Germany, I introduced what I call video sourcing: unorthodox methods how to use video for sourcing candidates online.

Make Job Shadows Part of the Hiring Process

Wed, 09/13/2017 - 07:46

Finding the right employee for the right job positions an organization to have an appreciating asset. Great employees become more valuable with time. So the true cost of not finding the best aligned individuals through effective employment screening tactics is difficult to quantify, though no less damaging to an employer’s potential.

Muzzle Will Stop an Embarrassing Desktop Notification from Ruining Your Next Skype Interview

Tue, 09/12/2017 - 17:00

A few years ago, I gave a webinar entitled something like “The Top Ten iPhone Apps for Recruiting.” To my surprise, the app that received the warmest reception had nothing to do with recruiting. It was called “White Noise.” Like its name indicates, users can play crickets, ocean waves, purring cats, or whatever white noise you prefer to fade away into dreamland.

Spider-Man Puzzles – Hiring the Right Pieces for Your Own Team

Tue, 09/12/2017 - 14:00

I’ve got four awesome kids! They are ages eight, six, two, and seven months. I know, that’s a lot of kids, and let me tell you, they are a handful. But I absolutely love them. One thing I love about my two oldest kids is that they love putting together puzzles. We’ve bought a lot of puzzles over the last few years. For a while, my oldest boy was really into Spider-Man, so we got him several Spider-Man puzzles. Some of these were made by the same company and had the same sized pieces, and it was hard to tell them apart. They often got mixed together when putting them away.

Mon, 09/11/2017 - 12:35

Over the past 30+ years, businesses have spent heavily on talent assessments. Many of these are now being used to understand job candidates. Increasingly, businesses are asking how (or if) a predictive talent acquisition strategy can include the use of pre-hire assessments? As costs of failed new hires continue to rise, recruiters and hiring managers are looking for any kind of pre-hire information to increase the probability of making a great hire.

SMBs Say: Keep H-1B But Give Us a Share

Mon, 09/11/2017 - 08:49

On July 11, the Trump administration made another major change to U.S. immigration policy that impacts the nation’s small and midsize businesses (SMBs) when the President postponed implementation of the International Entrepreneur Rule until March 14, 2018. This decision comes after the administration’s announcement in March to discontinue the “premium processing” of H-1B visa applications. The Trump administration reasons that its immigration reform policies will ensure a better deal for American industries. However, it appears that small and midsize business (SMB) owners don’t trust that the White House’s plans for immigration will deliver.
